Bialowieza Primeval Forest

The Bialowieza Forest is the largest forest area of Central Europe. The Bialowieza National Park is the oldest one in Poland (founded in 1921), well-known around Europe and of high repute among nature lovers. Nearly 100,000 people visit Bialowieza every year.

The total area of the park is 10502 ha; 4747 ha of which are strictly protected. The park protects the last bit of primeval Europe lowland forest with unique richness of flora and fauna.

Since 1977 the Bialowieza National Park has had the status of a UNESCO biosphere reserve and it is a part of a trans-boundary Polish-Belarusian World Heritage Site.

The European bison, the largest European mammal, is the symbol of the Bialowieza Forest.
